Workshop on Diplomatic Skills for
Modern Diplomacy: Trade, Information Technology and Diplomatic Relations,
18th - 22nd
February 2002
The Institute of International
Relations, in conjunction with Diplo Projects of the University of Malta,
will be hosting a Workshop on Diplomatic Skills for Modern Diplomacy:
Trade, Information Technology and Diplomatic Relation, from 18th
to 22nd February, 2002, at the St. Augustine Campus of The
University of The West Indies in Trinidad.
This workshop, which will target
primarily CARICOM and Latin American countries, is aimed at equipping
trade professionals and diplomats with the Information Technology (IT)
skills necessary for dealing with the changing face of diplomacy.
Participants will receive training in Information Management for trade and
diplomatic activity. This will include instruction in databases, web page
design, and the use of other Internet-based tools and services for the
conduct of diplomacy. Special emphasis will be placed on trade diplomacy
and information technology.
The concept of trade diplomacy will be
further explored through sessions on trade negotiations, bilateral
economic relations, dissection of regional diplomatic documents, and
analysis of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) negotiations. Introductory
lectures followed by practical training sessions will be held to
familiarise participants with "cyber negotiating", a facet of
modern diplomacy, as well as hypertext, chat, and online conferencing. Lectures will be delivered by practitioners from DIPLO Projects
and the Institute of International Relations.
This workshop is in keeping with the
Institute’s mandate to facilitate the incorporation of Information
Technology into the work and functions of organisations throughout the
region through various training initiatives.
