M. PHIL. DEGREE IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
Qualifications for Admission
The M. Phil Degree in International Relations is a research degree. Candidates will normally be required to have obtained an honours degree of good standard, preferably in a related field of study and a postgraduate Diploma in International Relations. Candidates must also satisfy the Institute of International Relations of their competence to conduct research in the general area of International Relations and in the specific area proposed for their theses.
Candidates will be required to present a detailed and well-structured thesis proposal for consideration by the staff of the Institute. Upon the acceptance of the topic and the proposal, the candidate will be assigned a supervisor approved by the Board for Higher Degrees on the recommendation of the Thesis Committee of the Institute.
Course of Study
Candidates for the M. Phil. Degree are required to submit their theses for examination within five calendar years of initial registration for full-time study or seven calendar years for part-time study.
Candidates are required to maintain regular contact with their Supervisor and to present papers on research to a Seminar of Staff and Students at least one a year.
The course of study for the degree of M. Phil. May include attendance at lectures and completion of prescribed courses.
Examination
Candidates for the M. Phil. Degree are required to be present for written and oral examinations at such places as the University may direct and at such times shall be notified. The candidate shall bring to any oral examination a copy of the thesis.
Before candidates are admitted to the examination for the degree, the Director of the Institute and the candidate's Supervisor shall report to the University Registrar that the programme of study has been satisfactorily completed.
Thesis Requirements
A thesis for the M. Phil. Degree shall be either a record of original work in the field of study or an ordered and critical exposition of existing knowledge in that field.
Candidates are required to present theses in accordance with University Regulations
Length of Thesis
The thesis for the M. Phil. In International Relations shall not exceed 50,000 words, exclusive of references, footnotes, appendices and bibliography.
PH. D. IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS
Qualifications for Admission
An applicant for registration for the Ph.D. Degree in International Relations must satisfy the minimum requirements for admission to the M. Phil. Degree.
All applicants for admission into the Ph.D. will normally be registered initially for the M. Phil. Degree. Candidates registered for the M. Phil. may be permitted to transfer the registration to the Ph.D. by the Board for Higher Degrees if the Institute so recommends. Recommendations for transfer to the Ph.D. Degree will be initiated by the candidate's Supervisor, based on an assessment of the scope, depth and the originality of the research in progress. Such recommendations will not normally be made before the beginning of the second year of registration.
Recommendations for transfer of registration will be assessed by a Review Committee of the Institute, which will also take into account the assessment of a substantial paper presented at a Seminar of Staff and Students.
If the recommendation to transfer is approved by the Board for Higher Degrees, the candidate's registration for the M. Phil. Will terminate and the Ph.D. registration will be dated from the date of the initial registration for the M. Phil. Degree.
Examination
Candidates for the Ph.D. Degree must submit a thesis and be examined orally. [University regulations clauses 69-72].
Before a candidate is admitted to the examination for the Degree, the Director and the candidate's Supervisor shall certify to the University Registrar that the programme of study has been satisfactorily completed.
Candidates for the Ph.D. shall submit their theses within six calendar years of initial registration for full-time study or eight calendar years for part-time study.
Thesis Requirements
A thesis for the Ph.D. Degree must form a distinct contribution to the knowledge of the subject, and afford evidence of originality shown by the discovery of new facts or by the exercise of independent critical power.
Requirements for the thesis will be as set out in the University Regulations. [Clauses 31-59].
Length of Thesis
The thesis for the Ph.D. in International Relations shall not exceed 80,000 words, exclusive of references, footnotes, appendices and bibliography.
